Can I Bring My Dog to My Photo Session?

I get this question a lot, and the answer is a resounding yes! As a dog lover who grew up with pets (and now has a cat of my own), I know how important your furry family members are. I’ve had the pleasure of including dogs in many family sessions, and I truly believe they add an extra layer of joy and personality to the photos. Whether your dog is a playful pup or a calm, loyal companion, they can make your family photos feel more authentic and full of life.

That said, since most of my sessions are held outdoors in public parks, if your dog tends to be reactive or anxious in busy environments, it might be more comfortable for everyone if they stay safely at home. But for the majority of pups, I encourage you to bring them along! With a little preparation and a few tips, we can make sure your dog is well taken care of and that the session runs smoothly for both you and them. Below, I’ve outlined some helpful suggestions to ensure that your dog feels relaxed, happy, and ready for their close-up.

1) Bring a Dog Helper - Friend, Family Member, or Hired Assistant

I always encourage clients to bring along a “dog helper” — a friend, family member, or even someone you hire specifically for the session (maybe your dog walker if you have one). The helper’s role is to keep your dog entertained while we focus on taking photos of the human-only members of the family. This allows us to get the beautiful family portraits both with and without your pup, and you don't have to worry about where your dog is or whether they’re getting antsy.

Having a helper also ensures your dog is well taken care of, so you don’t have to stress about keeping them calm or in the frame during the session. They can play with your pup, take them for a walk, or just keep them comfortable away from the action, which helps the session run smoothly and stress-free for everyone involved.

This makes the entire experience more enjoyable for both you and your dog. You’ll be able to relax, knowing your dog is in good hands, and I can focus on capturing the best moments of your family without any distractions.

2) Bring the Essentials - Treats, Toys and a Few Extras

To make your photo session more enjoyable for your dog (and everyone else), it’s important to come prepared with a few essentials. Bring along some of your dog's favorite treats and a beloved toy. Treats are a great way for me to encourage your pup to stay engaged, follow directions, and even reward them for being on their best behavior. A favorite toy can also help get their attention when we're trying to capture that perfect shot. Having these little "bribes" on hand will make your dog feel more at ease and make the experience smoother for everyone.

Don't forget the practical items, too! Be sure to bring doggie bags—because, as we all know, accidents can happen anytime. However, please remove the poop bag holder from your dog's leash before the session. It can be a bit of a distraction in photos, and we want your pup to look their best. Additionally, make sure you have some water and a plastic bowl to keep your dog hydrated, especially if it’s a warm day. Keeping your dog comfortable throughout the session will help them stay calm and happy, which leads to better photos!

3) Jazz it Up! - Fun Collars, Bandanas, or Leashes

Including your dog or another friendly pet in your family photo session can bring an extra layer of joy to your images. Pets have a unique way of adding personality and energy to a session, making the photos feel more dynamic and fun. Their playful presence can create natural, candid moments that you'll cherish, whether it's a happy wag of the tail or an affectionate cuddle with family members.

It’s also a great opportunity to add a little extra flair to your pet’s look! Consider bringing along a new collar, a cute bowtie, or a festive bandana to dress up your dog for the occasion. These small touches can make them stand out in the photos and complement your family’s outfits. Whether it’s a pop of color or a stylish accessory, it’s an easy way to give your pet a little extra charm and style while also making your photos feel fresh and personalized.

Funny Story

I once had a client ask if they could bring a cat to the family session and I admit, I was hesitant...until it turned out to be a hilarious miscommunication, and they had had life-size pillows made of their precious pet. Those were admittedly much easier to incorporate! I have taken professional photos of cats before - but only in their own homes with plenty of warm-up time. My own cat, Ziti, hides under the bed when company is over (and he starts as soon as there's a knock on the door!)

This was a professional model kitty, I swear!
