There is something about the start of a new school year that feels like a fresh page in a planner – clean and full of possibility. New routines settle in, summer's loose schedule fades, and suddenly your kids look just slightly older than they did three months ago. It happens every year, and every year it catches families off guard. This is exactly the kind of moment worth capturing with more than a quick snap on the front steps before the bus arrives – with relaxed, unposed portraits that show your family exactly as you are right now, in this season.
The Front-Step Photo is a Starting Point. But it's not the whole story
We all know the front-step photo. Backpack on, maybe a sign with the grade number, a slightly stiff smile before the morning rush. It is sweet, and it absolutely has a place in the family album. But it does not capture the way your daughter exists in her own world, the way she tilts her head when she is thinking, or the giggle she lets out when something catches her off guard.
It doesn't capture the big brother who still uses his kid sister's shoulders as an armrest – while keeping a hand ready in case she wobbles when she's in the middle of a growth spurt. Those are the details that make a photograph feel like you.
That is what a family session at the start of the school year is for.
Fall Is a Reset
For me, Fall has always felt like a big reset. There is something about the shift out of summer's slower, hazy pace and into the energy of a new school year that feels significant. New rhythms, new goals, new versions of your kids who somehow grew an inch and gained a whole new opinion (or five) over the summer.
That transition – between who your family was at the start of summer and who you are heading into Fall – deserves more than props and chalkboard signs. School is about friendships, learning, silliness, and memory-making, and that warmth is already in your family. My job is just to create the space for it to show up naturally.
What to Expect From a Relaxed Fall Session
If you have never done a session that feels relaxed and unscripted, here is what the experience actually looks like.
Comfort Comes First
Before I ever pick up my camera, my focus is on making sure everyone feels at ease – including the kids who have already announced they do not want their photo taken (this happens more than you might think, and it is never a problem).
Instead of lining everyone up and counting to three, I get your family moving, talking, and just being together while I work around you.
A Little Direction Goes a Long Way
Even the most natural-looking photos involve a little direction. I will suggest a walk, a game, a moment to sit together. That gentle nudge gives families enough structure to feel comfortable, without feeling staged.
The Details You Didn't Know You Wanted
The way your youngest scrunches her nose. The look your kids exchange before they both burst out laughing. The way your family actually moves and exists together – these are the images that end up on your walls and in your albums for years.
A Fall session is a chance to capture your family at a turning point in the year, with all the warmth and personality that belongs to this specific season of your life.
Why This Season Deserves More Than a Quick Snapshot
Photographs outlast today. They are for your kids when they are grown, for the grandparents who live across the country, for the wall in your home that has been waiting for exactly the right image.
The beginning of a school year is a moment your family will not get back. Your kids are exactly this age, exactly this height, exactly this version of themselves for only a few more months. That is not something to scroll past on your phone – it is something worth printing, framing, and holding onto.
I include print credits in every collection because I believe photos are meant to be lived with: printed, framed, flipped through, and passed down – not left to collect digital dust on your phone. These images are for you now, and they are for your family long after this season has passed.
Every year feels like a fresh start. This one can come with photos to prove it.
